Last year, Medium decided to change its primary reader appreciation feature from ‘Recommend’ to ‘Claps’. Claps is an ingenious feature — it definitely seems a more natural and intuitive expression for appreciating someone’s work.
However, I have been intrigued by the the two potential issues that this new change introduces: (a) clap inflation (i.e. higher claps by a reader based on existing number of claps on that article by other readers) and (b) reader’s subjectivity in appreciation of the author’s work. I have broken these problems down in the section that follows — let’s dive right into the details.
